If you are planning to create a dream kitchen in 2022, take advantage of one of the industry’s largest and most respected surveys of trends to use as a source of inspiration. Key takeaways for homeowners in Southern New Hampshire from the 2022 Houzz.com Kitchen Trends study include:

Homeowners investing more in their new kitchens than in prior years
Homeowners are demanding more private/enclosed spaces
Relying on professional designers and remodelers are increasing
Islands remain a top priority in new kitchens
Homeowners are splurging more on countertops

The survey results mirror trends we see among homeowners (in name of service territory). Almost half of homeowners reconfigure the layout when creating the kitchen of their dreams. However, open floor plans where the kitchen opens to other rooms in the home are decreasing. The Houzz survey found that only 38% of homeowners opted for an open floor plan compared to 46% in 2020. This is not surprising given that so many homeowners (in name of service territory) require their new kitchens to provide flexibility and serve multiple functions such as classroom, office, café, dining room, etc. This places a premium on separate and enclosed spaces.

Almost 90% of homeowners from the Houzz study retain professional assistance to remodel their kitchens and that too makes sense, especially in light of the difficulty in obtaining products and materials caused by supply chain challenges and finding qualified labor.

Countertops are replaced by 91% of homeowners remodeling their kitchens and quartz is the most popular countertop material. Again, this mirrors our experience with homeowners in Southern New Hampshire. Quartz is extremely popular because of its antimicrobial properties, it’s easy to clean, extremely durable and comes in a rainbow of color options. White is the most popular color for countertops, selected by 39% of homeowners, followed by multicolored (24%) and gray (12%). Granite is the second most popular countertop material selected for new kitchens.

Nearly a quarter of homeowners (24%) building a new dream kitchen selects a countertop color for their island that contrasts with other countertops in the kitchen. White also is the most selected color for island countertops followed by wood tones.

Homeowners in the survey and in Southern New Hampshire also invested more in their backsplash material. Ceramic and porcelain tile were specified for 56% of new kitchens, marble’s popularity is on the rise, selected by 11% of homeowners.

Hardwood remains the top choice among homeowners in Southern New Hampshire for flooring, followed by an increase in popularity for vinyl flooring.

White remains the most popular color for cabinets, selected by 41% of homeowners, followed by medium-toned wood (12%) and gray (10%). Gray also was the second most popular color selected for kitchen walls, behind white and stainless steel was the most popular finish for appliances.

Shaker continues to dominate cabinet preferences, selected by 64% of homeowners followed by flat panel (17%).

Nearly 60% of homeowners renovating their kitchens added an island that on average was more than 7 feet long. Rectangular islands were most popular shape selected by 83% of homeowners. The increased size of islands responds to the multiple functions homeowners in Southern New Hampshire demand from their islands. These include entertaining, socializing, eating, homework and serving as a workplace.

A perfect storm has occurred. Never before in the history of our showroom has demand been higher. And we are not unique. Almost every peer in the remodeling business is reporting record or near-record project volume. There are a number of reasons for current conditions. Many homeowners Southern New Hampshire have been working and schooling from home for more than a year. Many have told us that they are tired of their homes and their homes are tired of them. They want their homes to look, feel and function more effectively.

Second, those in Southern New Hampshire who have been fortunate to work through the pandemic have more discretionary income that can be earmarked for home improvements. Plus, interest rates remain at near all-time lows. Third, home values are ballooning upward with demand for new homes far exceeding supply. This combination has made many homeowners Southern New Hampshire realize that they can afford the kitchen or bath of their dreams.

What do current market conditions mean for homeowners who want to undertake a renovation project?

Start your research as early as possible. With many homeowners in Southern New Hampshire continuing to spend most of their time in their homes, they have realized that they want them, especially their kitchens, to be better. Working and schooling from home have shined a bright spotlight on kitchen storage capabilities, due in part to the fact that more homeowners in Southern New Hampshire are cooking more often and using their kitchen for multiple purposes.

Increasing the number of cabinets and enhancing their storage capabilities addresses homeowners' needs in Southern New Hampshire without necessarily having to increase the kitchen's size. Color is also increasingly popular for islands. 41% of homeowners in the Houzz.com survey choose an island color to contrast with their new cabinets. The most popular colors are blue and gray. Only 13% of renovations featured islands with the same color as cabinets.

For homes with a modern or transitional style, we will often recommend frameless cabinets. Frameless cabinets are built without a face frame. They will have minimal space between the doors and drawers, which maximizes interior storage and drawer space. The Latest Kitchen Remodel Trends

Houzz.com recently surveyed 2,600 individuals who completed a kitchen remodel in 2019 or planned to undertake one in the next three months.

Style Trends

A large majority of homeowners (85%) change the style of their kitchen when they renovate. In 2019, transitional was most popular, selected by 21% of homeowners, followed by contemporary (16%), modern (15%) and traditional style (11%). Transitional cabinets, fixtures and other kitchen staples combine both traditional and contemporary styles. Transitional has been the most favored décor style for three years running, found the Houzz survey. Farmhouse kitchens are not as popular. Only 11% of homeowners opted for a farmhouse kitchen according to survey respondents. This was a decline from 14% in 2018 and 12% in 2017.

Cabinets are King

Cabinets are the number one choice for upgrading during a kitchen renovation. 94% of homeowners reported upgrading cabinets as part of their kitchen renovation with 68% opting to replace all cabinets.

White Remains Number One

White kitchen cabinets continue to reign atop of the color heap in kitchen renovations with 45% of homeowners selecting white cabinets for their new kitchens. Wood-tone cabinets were the second most popular cabinet option (22%) followed by gray as the third most popular color choice.

Shake, Shake, Shake, Shaker

More than six in 10 homeowners selected a Shaker-style door front for their new kitchens. The second most popular style was a flat panel at 21% followed by raised panel doors at 18%. A majority of those replacing their cabinets during their kitchen remodel selected custom cabinets (40%). Another 36% of homeowners opted for semi-custom cabinets with a much smaller percentage of homeowners selecting stock (12%) and even fewer choosing ready to assemble.

Specialty Storage Draws A Crowd

A well-designed kitchen is an organized kitchen and increasingly homeowners in the Houzz survey and our clients in (name of service territory) appreciate the benefits of drawer and cabinet organizers. Cookie sheet or tray organizers were most popular, selected by 50% of homeowners upgrading their cabinets. 63% of homeowners selected drawers with pull out waste and/or recycling drawers. Lazy Susans were also popular organizers picked by 40% of homeowners renovating their kitchens. Another 36% of remodelers featured pullout or swing-out drawers. Nearly half of homeowners that renovated their kitchen upgraded their pantry.

Painted Or Stained? That Is The Question.

When planning the kitchen of their dreams, homeowners in Southern New Hampshire often wonder if they should select painted or stained cabinets. There is no right answer. The choice of stained or painted cabinets depends on the look and feel that a homeowner desires. Both paint and stain have pluses and minuses. The choice really depends on the style statement that you would like to make.

Paint offers a smooth surface with options for a glossy, matte or satin finish. There are unlimited color options, and paint can be applied to solid wood, plywood and medium-density fiberboard. Paint hides the features or grain of the wood used to make a cabinet.

Unlike paint, stain allows the natural beauty of wood to shine through. While paints come in every color in the rainbow, stain options are not as plentiful. The most popular stain choices among homeowners in Southern New Hampshire are brown, red and gold tones. Occasionally, we specify kitchen cabinets with blue, green or grey stains.

There is a cost difference between painted and stained cabinets. Paint is typically 15% more due to a more labor-intensive application process to cover the entire surface of the cabinet to achieve a smooth, clean, consistent look.

Cabinet Cleaning and Preservation

Stained wood cabinets should be cleaned semi-annually or quarterly if you are an avid cook because wood grain tends to absorb grease and dirt. We advise our clients in Southern New Hampshire to clean their stained cabinets by mixing seven parts distilled vinegar with one part rubbing alcohol and a few drops of dish soap. Using a microfiber cloth, wipe down cabinets with the alcohol, vinegar, soap mixture, and then rinse with warm water. Seal the finish with furniture oil to keep your sealed wood cabinets looking like new.

Painted cabinets should be wiped down with a damp microfiber cloth weekly. If you find that the cabinets still require TLC, then use the same alcohol, dish soap and vinegar mixture and approach recommended for stained wood cabinets.

Black and white cabinets serve as repositories for fingerprints, dust, dirt and grime. They should be wiped down weekly with a damp microfiber cloth. If you order white painted cabinets, request the showroom provide a small container of matching white paint that you can use to repair the chips and scrapes that often occur with regular usage.

Kitchen Island: Does it Work with Your Kitchen?

Kitchen island has been one of the most sought-after kitchen design elements, and this trend doesn’t seem to fade away. Not surprisingly, since islands offer a number of practical as well as aesthetic benefits. To list a few, islands function as a multipurpose workstation, an additional storage, or a dining area. At Granite State Cabinetry, we hold an initial meeting with the client, listen to all the preferences and considerations in mind, and only then evaluate the shape, size, and configuration of their brand new stand-alone kitchen island.

Some of the factors we’re assessing include the square footage of the kitchen itself, the number of house residents, as well as the intended uses for the new kitchen addition. The space between the cabinets and around the peninsula also referred to as the clearance zone, need to be at least 3 feet. This optimal clearance zone distance prevents the kitchen island from being a bulky obstacle. For instance, if there’s a dishwasher around or installed on the island, the opening door can create a potential tripping hazard.

Typically, a kitchen island is around 3 feet wide by 6.5 feet long. However, if your kitchen area is rather small, we can suggest custom solutions. For example, when the space is rather limited, consider different cabinets and drawers to minimize the island’s area. Or, if a traditional square and rectangular shape don’t work, think outside of the box.

If your kitchen cannot effectively accommodate an island, there is a number of similar solutions. The first and easiest solution is to start looking at rolling carts, butcher blocks and mobile islands. These elements can provide functionality, comparable to an island. The second option is to consider a peninsula, that can be attached to the wall and take up less space. Reconfiguring the kitchen outlay is the third and the most radical option. Though not always practical, moving the pipes, ducts, wiring, and even walls will create an open kitchen plan with enough space to go creatively.

If a kitchen is quite large and can accommodate an island, we always caution our clients not to go overboard. In other words, the kitchen island needs to be proportional to the room. As we mentioned earlier, 3 feet is the minimum clearance area, and while there’s no maximum, we don’t recommend it to be over 4 feet. Otherwise, the island feels out of place and is less comfortable to use.

Dish Soap and Mineral Oil

Use a microfiber cloth to clean your stainless surfaces. Apply dish soap to the cloth to clean, and then polish by applying a small amount of mineral or baby oil to a second cloth and polish the surface along the grain.

Club Soda

Apply club soda directly to the stainless surface, wipe in the direction of the grain and then remove residue with a microfiber cloth.

Glass Cleaner

Glass cleaner is a very effective way to remove fingerprints. Simply spray a microfiber cloth and apply in a circular motion to remove fingerprints and then wipe dry. The fingerprints should be gone, and the steel should be good as new!

Open floor plans can be tricky to design, they often mean losing a wall of cabinets, which makes it a challenge to provide ample storage for all your kitchen items.

There are some tricks of the trade to maximize space and create more room for storage. Depending on the size and layout of the kitchen of course, you may have to get creative.

Utilize the insides of your cabinets. No matter how small your kitchen is, there will always be a few cabinets, while you’re trying to stuff pots and pans into the cabinets themselves, you may not even realize that the insides of the cabinets offer largely uncharted storage space. Though it may not be ample room for pans or any large kitchen items, installing small hooks or a pegboard can allow you to hang different utensils or measuring cups, items which would normally clutter up a valuable drawer.

We’ve recently explored new routes that homeowners are discovering with their kitchen designs in 2016 . With an emphasis on cabinet lighting, high-tech appliances, and metal range hoods, we can expect to see some major kitchen transitions.

According to the National Kitchen & Bath Association , there will be some additional features we can expect to see in our kitchens:

Primarily in the Southeast United States, outdoor kitchens are utilized. In 2015, roughly 45% of NKBA members built an outdoor kitchen. About the same number expects to do this in 2016.

In order to accommodate a busy lifestyle, homeowners are using easy prep, maintenance, and clean-up features. 74% of respondents purchased under-counter wine refrigerators in 2015 and over half installed pull-outs/roll-outs for storage and under-sink garbage disposals.

One of the biggest surprises to hit 2016 was the introduction of special pet spaces in kitchens. These include feeding stations, under-counter crates, and pull-outs specifically for pet food and toys.
